Why is Starlink better than the NBN?
Why is Starlink better than the NBN FTTN
When comparing Starlink to NBN technologies like FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), FTTC (Fibre to the Curb), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node), the experience can vary significantly based on your location and the local infrastructure. Starlink provides a consistently fast and reliable internet service thanks to its network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. With over 7,000 of satellites overhead, Starlink minimises latency and congestion, delivering a smooth and responsive connection.
While NBN FTTP generally offers the best speeds and reliability where available, FTTC and FTTN often suffer from ageing copper infrastructure and inconsistent performance—particularly during peak times. Starlink bypasses all that by providing a direct satellite link to your location, offering a reliable alternative in areas where fibre performance is lacking or unavailable.

Why is Starlink Better than the NBN?
Starlink delivers faster, more reliable internet by using a vast network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. With over 8,000 satellites already in orbit—and new ones launched weekly by SpaceX—Starlink ensures global coverage with minimal latency and excellent performance, especially in rural or remote areas.
In contrast, NBN Satellite (Sky Muster) relies on just two geostationary satellites located much higher in orbit. This distance introduces significant latency (response delay) and bandwidth congestion, as thousands of users share limited resources.
If you’re using NBN Fixed Wireless or NBN Satellite, upgrading to Starlink can drastically improve your speeds, reliability, and overall online experience.
Is Starlink Better than NBN?
The answer depends on which NBN technology you have access to:
- If you’re on NBN FTTN (Fibre to the Node), Fixed Wireless, or Satellite, Starlink is typically faster and more reliable.
- If you’re connected via NBN FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), you’ll likely have the best speeds available and may not see a significant improvement by switching.
Starlink’s LEO satellite network reduces latency and avoids the bottlenecks common with copper-based or shared-bandwidth NBN technologies. It’s an ideal solution for households or businesses experiencing unstable or slow NBN performance.
Is Starlink Faster than NBN?
Starlink can outperform many forms of NBN—especially FTTN, Fixed Wireless, and Satellite connections—with download speeds regularly exceeding 100 Mbps and much lower latency. However, NBN FTTP, where available, often still provides the fastest and most consistent internet due to the advantages of full-fibre infrastructure.
Keep in mind:
- Starlink speeds are excellent, but they may fluctuate with network congestion or weather.
- FTTP connections usually offer lower latency and higher upload speeds, making them ideal for streaming, gaming, and business use.
For most rural users, though, Starlink is a clear winner over Fixed Wireless and Satellite NBN.
Starlink vs NBN FTTP – Which is Better?
NBN FTTP is the best solution for internet as it provides ultra-fast speeds, low latency, and exceptional stability via a dedicated fibre connection to your home or business.
That said, FTTP is not available everywhere. In areas where only FTTN, FTTC, Fixed Wireless, or Satellite is offered, Starlink is a far superior alternative, offering city-like speeds without relying on outdated copper lines or oversubscribed wireless towers.
If you’re lucky enough to have access to FTTP, stick with it. But if you’re in an non Fibre area or suffering from poor NBN performance, Starlink is the best alternative on the market today.
